Thanks so much for the helpful replies to my desperate-dressmaker-search post - very sensible suggestions that I will follow up on ASAP :)

On a more any-suggestions-please? front, I'm looking for yet another doctor to add to my ever-expanding team of specialists (seriously, I'm starting to feel like Liz Taylor up in here). Prepare for long story to commence... now.

Last year I had a lot of bizarro symptoms that really strongly pointed toward hypothyroidism, so I had bloodwork done by my internist. It turned that in fact my B12 level was REALLY low, and pernicious anemia (an autoimmune inability to absorb vitamin B12 properly, if you're wondering) explained away most of my symptoms, so super B12 supplements helped almost immediately with a lot of the symptoms. BUT I'm still having a handful of pretty bad symptoms that still seem to be pointing very strongly toward hypothyroidism - and in fact, my internist last year told me that my thyroid hormones were on the "low end of normal." From what I understand from Dr. Internet - don't worry, I'm a professional librarian, so me and Dr. Internet get along nicely - there's actually a lot of debate about what constitutes a normal "thyroid" level and whether that number might vary among individuals.

So here's where you come in. I'm looking for recommendations for an endocrinologist (or internist, if you see them for your thyroid) who is willing to consider treating "low normal" thyroid levels as hypothyroidism, in the presence of a plethora of other systems pointing toward a hypothyroid issue. It'd be great if they took GHI, but I don't expect you to do the legwork on that for me. Manhattan preferred, please, as this is where I live and work (sorry). Thanks so much, my fellow hyper-hypos!!!

Orthofer was a great interview subject, and the feature came out great, I think. Fascinating stuff. Here’s a snippet:

To what extent can you forgive a bad translation of a good book? And can you see the quality peeking through?

M.A. Orthofer: A bit of forgiveness is always necessary: the process of translation always seems to entail some (and often a lot of) loss, and there are many days and books where I think it’s only a matter of…degrees of badness. My personal preference is for a more literal translation, where you can ‘hear’ the original (language) through the translation, as it were, even if that can sound awkward in English. Most publishers and editors (and, I guess, translators) prefer to English (or Americanize) the texts, which I suppose makes them more readable–though when the approach goes wrong the results can be pretty disastrous. (What I find more problematic, however, is when there is more extensive editorial interference at the translation stage, and books are ‘reshaped’ (generally by trimming away a lot) for the English-language market–Wang Gang’s English is one example from last year’s crop of books.)

Looks like we are soon to have a new pub in the neighborhood.

They are calling this new "gastropub" The Brickhouse. Located on 9th Ave. between 52nd and 53rd, and is expected to open Friday, March 12th or Saturday at the latest according to my source.

Located in the recently abandoned Italian place, the renovation looks like they are definitely going for an upscale vibe with a neighborhoody third place feel.

MORE )

I've recently moved and whereas I use to just place my trash in the bins (trash or recycling)and the super would take it from there, now I'm responsible for placing it outside on the day of pick-up. I've been on the nyc website looking at the requirements and it says that paper recycling is to be placed in clear bags and cartons/bottles/cans/metal recycling should also be placed in clear bags.

I was under the impression that recycling for the bottles/metal catagory were placed in blue bags and have seen these all over the place. Does it matter? Also, is there a brand of clear (or blue) bag that anyone could recommend for a single guy that doesn't produce a ton of waste and doesn't require the mammoth bag?

Also, plants. I need some plants but want to get something that won't die easily by being confined to an apartment that can go from being somewhat cold to extremely hot. i have great sunlight most of the day. Any recommendations of anything cheap but somewhat big?

Rich girl: I went to Forever21 and bought a dress. Then I stole some sunglasses and other accessories along with it, cause you know, times are rough.

Hey,
I just joined this community a couple of hours ago after reading through a lot of the posts...and figured I could ask for some advice.

Anyone know of some hair salons that do out of the ordinary dye/styling jobs in NYC? (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan. Manhattan preferred but any of those are fine). I'm looking to have this: (not me) http://i42.tinypic.com/zstzsw.jpg done to my hair and dont have a clue how to do it myself so thought I'd look into getting it done professionally but didnt have a clue where to look.

Edit: I just found Hair Metal in Brooklyn which seems interesting but I'd still like other suggestions or reviews if any of you have been there.

I would also like to know if anyone knows where to get a black denim shirt with snaps instead of buttons for not too expensive?

Edit edit: Just wondering about the denim shirt now. Thanks for all the hairdye help.
